Using art in your scripture study can be a great way to enhance your understanding, learning, meditation, and application of God’s Word. I can help you with some tips and resources to get started.

First, you need to decide what kind of art you want to use in your scripture study. There are many options, such as:

    • Creating your own art based on a scripture passage, such as a drawing, painting, or collage.

    • Coloring or illustrating a pre-made scripture art, such as a coloring page, a bookmark, or a card.

    • Viewing and reflecting on existing art based on scripture, such as paintings, sculptures, stained glass windows, or mosaics.

Second, you need to choose a scripture passage that you want to study and connect with art. You can use a scripture reading plan (such as Come Follow Me), or a random selection method to find a passage that speaks to you. You can also use a talk, a study guide, or a devotional to help you understand the context, meaning, and application of the passage. I recommend searching the passage on churchofjesuschrist.org

Third, you need to engage with the scripture passage and the art in a meaningful way. You can use some of these questions to guide your reflection:

    • What does the scripture passage say? What does it mean? How does it apply to your life?

    • What does the art say? How does it relate to the scripture passage? How does it make you feel?

    • What does the scripture passage and the art say together? How do they complement or contrast each other? How do they enrich your understanding and appreciation of God’s Word?

Fourth, add the art and what you have learned from it to your journaling scriptures or scripture journal.

Art has always been an important part of my life and I find using it in my scripture study has made God’s word more meaningful to me. They say a picture says a thousand words, and I 100% agree with that! Sometimes in my study, I’ll have lots of thoughts, quotes and journaling but I almost always try to include some type of art to highlight the parts that are most meaningful to me. How will you use art in your scripture study?
